Qanats, Acequias and Waterwheels: How Water Engineering Shaped Al-Andalus
Travel through parts of southern and eastern Spain today and you may encounter seemingly modest traces in the landscape: an old irrigation channel crossing an orchard, the remains of a waterwheel beside a river, a small weir, or even a mysterious line of wells disappearing across the countryside.
These features are part of a much larger story: the sophisticated management of water that developed across al-Andalus, the Muslim-ruled territories of medieval Iberia.
In a land where access to water could determine whether a field remained dry or became a productive orchard, Andalusi communities developed and spread ingenious systems for collecting, lifting, channelling and distributing water.
The qanat: finding water underground
One of the most fascinating of these systems is the qanat, also known elsewhere in the Islamic world as a foggara or khattara.
A qanat is essentially an underground drainage gallery designed to collect groundwater and carry it towards the surface using gravity.
In many systems, a succession of vertical shafts connected the underground gallery with the surface. These shafts helped with excavation, ventilation and maintenance.
Seen from above, they can look like a mysterious line of holes crossing an otherwise empty landscape. Yet beneath them may lie an extraordinary piece of hydraulic engineering.
The fundamental principle was remarkably simple: rather than continuously lifting water mechanically, the builders worked with the topography and carefully controlled the gradient so that gravity did the work.
Although underground water-capture techniques existed before the Islamic conquest of Iberia, they were disseminated and employed extensively throughout the Islamic world and the medieval West.
More than qanats
Andalusi hydraulic engineering relied on different technologies depending on the landscape and the source of the water.
Groundwater could be collected through underground galleries such as qanats.
Water from rivers, canals and wells could be raised using waterwheels.
River water could be diverted using small weirs, known in Spanish as azudes.
And an extensive network of acequias — irrigation channels — then carried water towards orchards and fields.
Rather than isolated inventions, these technologies formed interconnected hydraulic landscapes.
Waterwheels: lifting water without modern pumps
Waterwheels are perhaps one of the most recognisable symbols of this culture of water.
Some were powered directly by the current of a river. As the wheel rotated, containers attached to it collected water at the bottom and emptied it into a channel at a higher level.
Other systems were powered by animals.
Medieval sources describe waterwheels in places including Toledo, Lorca and Murcia, while Córdoba preserves the memory of one of Iberia’s most famous historic waterwheels beside the Guadalquivir: the Albolafia.
The linguistic legacy is equally fascinating. The Spanish word noria derives from Arabic nāʿūra, one of many reminders that the history of water management remains embedded in the Spanish language itself.
Acequias and azudes: redirecting a river
Andalusi farmers and engineers also made extensive use of small weirs or azudes.
Unlike a large dam designed primarily to store water, an azud could raise the level of a river just enough to divert part of its flow into an irrigation channel.
Even the word tells a story: Spanish azud derives from Arabic al-sudd.
From there, water could enter a network of acequias and eventually reach cultivated land.
These irrigation systems ranged enormously in scale, from extensive agricultural areas surrounding major cities to small irrigated plots associated with rural settlements.
Medieval cities surrounded by orchards
To understand al-Andalus, we need to look beyond its famous palaces, mosques and fortresses.
The Islamic city was closely connected to the agricultural landscape surrounding it.
Important urban centres could be encircled by irrigated orchards and gardens supplying fruit, vegetables and other produce to their inhabitants.
Medieval descriptions of Toledo, for example, evoke gardens crossed by irrigation channels and watered by hydraulic wheels.
The relationship between city, water and agriculture was therefore fundamental to the Andalusi landscape.
Water changed what people could grow
The importance of irrigation was not simply that more land could be cultivated.
Reliable access to water allowed farmers to intensify production and obtain multiple harvests, significantly increasing agricultural productivity.
The Islamic period also saw the diffusion of valuable crops. Historical sources discussed in the study include rice, sugar cane, cotton and citrus fruits, alongside long-established staples such as wheat and barley.
Water therefore supported a more intensive and diversified agricultural economy.
But distributing water may have been the greatest challenge
Building an irrigation channel was only part of the problem.
Communities also had to decide who could use the water, when they could use it and for how long.
Where water was scarce, irrigation could be divided into turns or tandas. Officials were responsible for overseeing channels and weirs, enforcing customary rules and resolving disputes concerning the distribution of water.
Historical sources even refer to officials specifically associated with water justice.
The hydraulic legacy of al-Andalus should therefore not be understood simply as a collection of ingenious machines.
It was also a social system for managing a scarce and extremely valuable resource.
A landscape whose history is still visible
There is an important historical nuance.
Muslims did not arrive in an Iberian Peninsula without hydraulic technology. Romans and earlier societies had already practised irrigation and knew several of the techniques later used in al-Andalus.
The significance of the Islamic period lies particularly in the expansion, adaptation and diffusion of hydraulic systems, including small irrigation channels, weirs, waterwheels and other methods of intensive water management.
Many irrigation landscapes also survived political conquest and continued operating for centuries.
So when we walk beside an old acequia, encounter a historic waterwheel or see a line of shafts revealing the course of an underground gallery, we are looking at much more than an archaeological curiosity.
We are reading the traces of a landscape built around water.
And this may be one of the most enduring legacies of al-Andalus: not only the monuments that still dominate the skylines of Spanish cities, but the way water was channelled, shared and transformed into fertile landscapes
